Core features

High energy absorption

Can absorb hundreds to thousands of joules of energy in a single event, effectively suppressing lightning strikes and switching surges.

Wide voltage range

The pressure-sensitive voltage ranges from 18V to 1800V, covering low-voltage DC to high-voltage AC applications.

Cost-effective

Compared to TVS, the cost per unit energy absorption is lower, making it suitable for high-energy surge protection at the power stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between MOV and TVS? How should I choose?

MOV can absorb more energy (Joule level), suitable for power surge protection from lightning strikes. TVS has a faster response speed (picosecond level) and higher clamping accuracy, suitable for signal line and IC protection. It is recommended to use MOV for the power side and TVS for the signal side, with both used together for multi-stage protection.

Does MOV age?

After each surge absorption, the MOV's voltage rating slightly decreases and leakage current increases. In environments with frequent lightning strikes, regular inspection or the use of a thermal disconnect device is recommended to prevent overheating due to degradation.

How to choose the correct MOV surge voltage rating?

The MOV's peak voltage (V1mA) should be greater than 1.2 to 1.4 times the maximum continuous operating voltage of the circuit. For example, for an AC 110V power supply, it is recommended to choose an MOV with a V1mA of 180V-220V.

What is the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)?

Chen Jia Technology has no minimum order quantity. We can provide quotes from prototyping to mass production, so please feel free to contact us directly.

Is it in stock? How long is the delivery time?

Common part numbers are in stock, with same-day shipping for urgent orders at the fastest. For non-stock part numbers, delivery usually takes 2-4 weeks.

What certifications does MOV offer?

The product has passed UL and TUV certification, and some high-energy series have passed IEC 61643-11 SPD standard testing.

Can you provide alternative material suggestions?

Okay. Please provide the part numbers or specifications you are currently using, and we will reply with alternative part comparisons and quotations within one business day.

Can you provide the datasheet?

Of course. Please inform us of the model you need via the contact form or email (sales@shen-jia.com.tw), and we will provide you with the complete datasheet.

Does MOV degrade over time? What is its approximate lifespan?

Yes. After each surge absorption, the leakage current of the MOV will slightly increase. In a normal use environment (low lightning strike frequency), the lifespan can reach over 10 years. It is recommended to replace it periodically in areas with frequent lightning strikes.

How to choose the rated voltage for an MOV?

The rated voltage (varistor voltage) of the MOV should be slightly higher than the maximum normal operating voltage of the circuit. For example, an AC 110V circuit typically uses an MOV with a rating of 150V-180V, and an AC 220V circuit uses an MOV with a rating of 270V-330V.

Can multiple MOVs be connected in parallel in a circuit?

Yes, but it is not recommended to connect them in parallel arbitrarily. When connecting MOVs in parallel, their specifications must be exactly the same. Otherwise, differences in characteristics will lead to uneven current distribution. If a higher energy absorption capability is required, it is recommended to use a single MOV with higher specifications instead.

How to match MOVs and fuses on a power supply?

The MOV is placed behind the fuse. When the MOV fails due to repeated surge degradation and short-circuits, the fuse will blow, preventing the MOV from overheating and catching fire. This is a standard design required by safety regulations.
